Similar to screen printing, it starts with a master made of rice paper, and then prints spot colours one at a time with soy based inks. It's a low energy and low cost process making it sustainable and accessible.
We have a rage of 10 Riso colours. Each colour can be combined to create more, so even if your artwork is very colourful, we can print it!
We offer a colour consultation for your artwork, so don't be shy if you're unsure about how it works, we're here to help. We can also prepare your artwork for print for you.

We can print up to A3 size with a 1cm margin. If you're after a full bleed print, we can go up to 40cm x 27.7cm.
We often print smaller prints (like A4, A5 etc) on an A3 and then cut them down to save you print costs.
You can send us prepared files in pdf, with each colour layer separated, and in black and white.
If you just read this and are confused, you can also send us what you have and we can prepare files for you! Please have them saved to the size you will print them, at 300dpi, and we will do the rest.
Yes! We stock a few coloured paper, but if you're after something special we can order something in for you.
Riso inks are transparent, so some of the paper colour can come through the print. For example if you're printing Pink on a Yellow paper, the print will come out slightly orange.
We offer our House Paper which is a recycled off white paper at a medium weight of 170gsm (a perfect weight for posters, or thick flyers). We also stock a variety of paper colours and thickness to accommodate different projects. If you're after something special let us know, and we can either suggest options, or order something special in.
We can print on paper as thin as 80gsm (newspaper weight) to 270gsm (thick card) so depending on your project needs, we can be flexible.
Your print costs are calculated first by the number of colours used, then adding print quantity and paper on top.
The initial set-up is where most of the production time is spent. Once this is ready, the machine will work it's magic. Riso is an economy of scale, so the more copies you print, the cheaper the cost per print will be.
Because Riso is an economy of scale, we recommend printing a minimum of 10 A3 copies per colour.
For example, if you are printing a 3 colour print in A3, we recommend a minimum of 30 prints.
If you are printing a 2 colour A4 print, we recommend printing a minimum of 40 prints (10 copies per colour = 20 A3 sheets, cut to A4 = 40)
Printing with Riso will guarantee you a unique print - we can work with colour that you can't achieve with traditional printing techniques. Because Riso acts a bit like screenprinting where the ink sits on the paper, it gives a textured finish that you can't get elsewhere.
If you're looking for a 'perfect' print, Riso might not be the way to go. The beauty of the process is the imperfections of it : the ink might move, the registration of the colours won't always be perfectly consistent. This is the charm of Riso, it feels human, handmade and perfectly imperfect.
